YMCA welcomes new research published today by The Children’s Society – ‘On Your Own Now’ – calling for better support for homeless 16 and 17-year-olds.
Responding to the release of the report, Denise Hatton, Chief Executive of YMCA England said: “16 and 17-year-olds unable to live at home can be extremely vulnerable. They may appear confident and ‘streetwise’ but the reality is often very different.
“Those who are unable to continue living at home can quickly become isolated, lonely and lack self-esteem, missing out on educational and social opportunities that others of the same age take for granted.
“Without a safe place to stay and the guidance of caring, responsible adults, many of these young people face a greater risk of spending periods of unemployment and homelessness, with little hope for the future.
“As the largest voluntary sector provider of supported accommodation for young people in England, YMCA is committed to finding appropriate and tailored housing solutions for this age group.
“Examples include our supported lodging schemes, through which we offer 16 and 17-year-olds a room in the homes of families, providing them with a safe and supportive environments to live while preparing them for independent living.”
