U2 - a great insider review of their new show - not just a gig !

So exciting
It sounds so
Not that I have been there yet
BUT - we will be in Glasgow

WOW

SAN JOSE — About 20 years ago, U2 staged a media-skewering tour called Zoo TV. The band's latest romp should just be called "TV."
The dominant technological motif of the Irish band's latest show — which roared through the SAP Arena here Tuesday, the second night of a U.S. tour that kicked off Monday — is an enormous double-sided screen that fully bisects the audience.
Not only are massive animations projected onto the screens, but the band frequently performs from inside the gap between the two, literally captured inside the whirl of images — humans interacting with digital 1s and 0s.
The artistic effect is powerful. Though you've come to see the band members live, one is often left watching them on television in a surreal pop-art installation powered by flesh, blood and tech.
"What do you think?" boomed Bono, after the band finished performing Even Better than the Real Thing from inside the screens. "We're not afraid of tech. We like innovation."
If the computing power in a simple smartphone far exceeds what NASA used to send men to the moon in the 1960s, one strains to describe the processing muscle needed to run the screens on this Innocence & Experience tour. Tech company EMC is responsible for powering the visuals, anchored to use of its VNXe3200 hybrid-flash storage unit that allows U2's animators to play with huge uncompressed files for maximum resolution over an expansive screen.
But the gadgetry of the show did not limit itself to the screens. Tech references were sprinkled throughout the concert, often subtly.
Bono's ties to Silicon Valley date back to the band's early collaboration with Apple — the red U2 iPod of 2004 — which led to a deep friendship with Steve Jobs and by extension other tech titans. Shortly after the iPod deal, Bono helped co-found area VC firm Elevation Partners.
Early in the show, Bono told the crowd, "I have so many friends here," and then announced that the following song, Iris, was "for a very special mother, Sheryl." Last month, Bono performed One at the memorial service for SurveyMonkey CEO Dave Goldberg, the husband of Facebook COO and Lean In author Sheryl Sandberg.
Later in the performance, Bono whispered, "Laurene, this is for you," and launched into the romantic song Every Breaking Wave. Laurene Powell Jobs is Steve Jobs' widow.
Bono then name-checked another tech world legend — Apple designer Jony Ive — when he asked a fan whether she had a smartphone that could record video. With her nod, Bono pulled the woman on stage.
"Let's try something," he said. "Why don't you film us during this next song."
U2 then launched into The Sweetest Thing while their amateur videographer recorded the proceedings. The resulting video — in the vein of new Meerkat and Periscope live-broadcasting technology — did not appear as one might have hoped on the screens, but it was for the moment a brilliant souvenir for one fan.
While the four childhood friends from Dublin have long ago been elevated to rock deity, they've never been shy about using tech to put the spotlight more on their art than themselves. The massive screens on this tour extend that tradition, showcasing their communicative power during Sunday Bloody Sunday, a song about the Irish civil rights protesters who were killed by British troops in 1972.
"We should never forget them," said Bono, as endless photographs of faces filled the screens, technology aiding music in forging an indelible memory.

This is not - NOT my home

A life sentence in Pennsylvania means exactly that. These BHP's all women, all of whom have served decades in prison, sing of the very real possibility of dying alone in prison.
I have just wept my guts out.
So I want to share this with you.

Play full screen
Full volume
See those eyes ...............

STAY .............

It soothes our sorrows - heals our wounds .....

There is no shadow
of turning with you .......

We all have secrets.
There is a lot going on in there.
Your exterior is busy.
Your interior is busier.

We all have secrets.
We are all in danger
of living two lives::
1 Presented to others
2 The one we hold secret.

You can be in danger.
Danger of collision.
Danger of one cracking.
The failure of exterior -
failing to keep our interior
in lockdown.

It seems that the exterior shell
was working good and proper.
But what about the interior human?

If we carry strong feelings inside,
and pretend they don't exist,
it is like wrapping the issue up in a brown paper package.
Then it is pushed down inside our gut.
And the next one, and the next one ......

Over the years we keep these unresolved wounds
we keep these unresolved feelings
we keep these unresolved broken relationships
we keep these unresolved emotional scars
we keep the brown paper parcels
inside our gut -
not buried dead
but buried alive .......

We then use up so much emotion
just keeping them down
keeping them inside
keeping them locked-down.

Many humans then seek professional help.
Counsellors are trained to help with this.
Each parcel and be removed
opened up, talked about,
owned
revealed
not hidden anymore
one at a time
and the pressure comes off.

If we don't do this things can go wrong.
Behaviour will be changed as the interior leaks.
Emotions driving behaviour.
The exterior human cannot contain the pain.
Pop.

We can encounter
or be an extreme case.
Erratic behaviour to another maybe.
Isolation another.
Alcohol, chemicals and ........

Another, positive response, is to join up the dots.
Bringing both interior/exterior together.
Being more open
(see my clicks about 'Level Five')
Working at mask removal
(we can still keep our secrets)
but sharing more of our vulnerability.
Vulnerability is a strength NOT a weakness.

It soothes our sorrows
heals our wounds …….

When U2 came to town

The day begins the night before. The GA Line. thoughts go to them out all night, even though this time round all GA are guaranteed to be close up.
They want to be closer…
Instagram’s emerge. We are coming! At the airport. In the pub. 8000 miles or down the road. We bought the tickets, we put on our colours. we buy the badges, the t’s & the VIP’s
We met the band! They signed our stuff. they are married to Brazillians! We signed their (ONE) stuff. We brought our families, our friends we met. We selfied the set. And the setlist.
We stood at the stairs. We went backstage. The riggers went up. The lights went down. Love came to our town.
With awe, joy, grace — they filled that space. Bigger than all the mighty gear that fills dozens of trucks.
We got up close, we put up our periscopes. God Save The Queen. Watching Iris running, from a bedroom on Cedarwood Road.
We tweeted the setlist, at the chords first strike.
‘That pre-Raised By Wolves bit doesn’t carry 1% of the weight over the internet that it does in person. Gotta be there’. said Matt
Johnny Cash showed up. BB (King) was in the house. The Meerkat popped its head up, spluttered then vanished. We hope she will return another day.
‘In the presence of giants and some very large 49ers’ said the singer and we did sing Pride for Baltimore, Ferguson. ‘Inside its America;’ said Stefan
‘Bono gives props to the Bay Area for fighting the HIV epidemic, leading the way on how world can be shaped’ said Sherry.
We waited for ‘shine like stars’ in WOWY, as we do every time. It didn’t come…. this time… but the stars did shine. in front of the screen, inside the screen. without the screen.

And we do it all again tomorrow. #u2ietour
