YMCA ARMENIA - you changes my life

Armenia

September 2001
The rest of my life began here …….

Armenians are so very crumbling poor on the surface,
more-so than Bulgaria which I know much better.
I consider that, because they don’t know they are poor –
or feel poor, they are more liberated in lifestyle,
culture, less comparison with others and have lighter personalities.

No Baywatch, Dallas 10 years old,
TV Channels: 2 x Russian, 2 x Armenia,
no cinema, no McDonalds, strong sense of national identity.
We can see our own culture when we see, feel experience other cultures.
Jesus became a 1st century Palestinian Jew. Understand that!

I was tired when I got to Armenia
due to all needed before departure.
Time pressure.
People pressure.
Late nights.

Flight = missed a nights sleep.
I came alive in front of 50 Armenians,
lots of young people,
the rest ‘professionals’ from 6 Local YMCA’s in Armenia.
I worked with the teenagers.
We played Rolling Magazine games, fun and deep games,
used the Blob Tree and the Blob Family of Materials,
videos x Greenbelt x Rolling Magazine x Adam and
danced with them to my 17 CD.’s – no iPod in those days.

I did what I do best - work
with young humans and I loved it !
They even thought I was cool!
At the same time we lived amongst the snow
by the side of a beautiful lake – somewhere in Armenia.

I did ‘Level 5’ with the teenagers and they got it!
The Triad group work I used was with two people and
an observer of the body language (NVC).
They could see and read non-verbal communication on the Blob Tree
but not when observing real moving talking people!
One observer didn’t see the handkerchief placed to the eye of someone present -
and a tear.
Interesting how we need to see through the front of our eyes but –
‘eyes wide open’ –
a youth worler needs to see the fringes of life too.

We ‘group hugged’ and ‘circle massaged’ every time we met -
2 hour sessions x 8 hours a day x 3 days!
Beautiful humans.
My tiredness was lifted and replaced with so many positives.
We worked, laughed, stretched, learned together.
Then more.
We just rolled into life and I will never forget the experience.

As I left that beautiful place at 6am (UK time 2am),
I slipped in the snow and out of the darkness stepped 3 teenagers,
having been up all night,
lifting me to my feet.
I was amidst angels.

We hugged and said farewells.
The last thing, one of them said
“Don’t forget us”.

They have so little
They have so much -
they gave me so much.

DU SHOT LOVE MORT ES

‘Don’t forget you’ you said –
you changed my life.
It was that experience that triggered a yearning to do more of what I love to do –
and what I consider do best – and do it full time!

Two years later, and having given seven months notice,
I left Romford YMCA and left behind thirty years of ‘Community Leadership’.
I went freelance.
Conducting Group-Work and facilitating training
as is now and
forever shall be!

They had so little
They gave of themselves
The greatest gift of all.

They gave me so much.

I am digging into my love for you

In your Becoming
In my own Becoming

I am digging into my love for you

I need to ask myself questions ::
Is my love for you
oppressive possessive or manipulative
or really affirming and liberating.

It will help,
in this self questioning if
I ask myself these questions::

1   Is it more important to me
that you are nurtured into growth
or that I will be pleased in your momentum?

2   Is it more important that you are self determining
who you want to be,
or that you become what I want for you?

If you are not self determining
It could mean an oppressive relationship.

I believe in self determination
as much as I believe in anything.

Heroes of the State - Foster Care

EastEnders' portrayal of foster care is cynical, inaccurate and nasty
Andy Elvin

Foster carers do extraordinary things for vulnerable children. They deserve more than shoddy storylines from the BBC

EastEnders has recently been running a fostering storyline. After the great work they did in 2011 with Comic Relief, highlighting childhood sexual exploitation in a special film, I was expecting writing of similar quality.

Sadly, on this occasion they fell a long way short. The character of Jade has been placed in foster care, and EastEnders has the birth family track her down at her foster placement easily. We also discover that the foster carer she is placed with will accept cash bribes to cut some of Jade’s hair and pass it to the birth family so they can undertake a DNA test to ascertain her parentage. The foster carer then arranges contact with family members who Jade has never met before.

Teenagers deserve foster families too, but who will take them on?

So far, so dramatic you might say. To an extent fair enough: this is fiction so why not pump up the drama? Except that every day more than 50,000 foster carers are looking after our most vulnerable children on our behalf. They are doing this for little money and sometimes with inadequate support. They are, as Lord Laming recently said, “heroes of the state”.

None of them, not one, not ever, would do anything like the EastEnders storyline. And we need more of them, desperately, more ordinary people with the heart, the emotional stamina and the determination to do extraordinary things for the children they care for on our behalf.

EastEnders has millions of viewers, some of them foster carers, some of them children in foster care and some of them potential foster carers. How many might have been put off by the cynical, poorly researched and downright nasty portrayal of foster care by the BBC?

U2'S STOCKHOLM GIG ABANDONED LAST MINUTE, WITH REPORTS OF ARMED MAN

U2'S STOCKHOLM GIG ABANDONED LAST MINUTE, WITH REPORTS OF ARMED MAN

The show was cancelled, and fans asked to leave the venue, at 10.30pm

U2's show in Stockholm was at the last minute yesterday (20 September) due to a "security threat", which local publications are reporting was an armed man.
After a few people had been allowed into the venue, staff began refusing fans entry due to a "ticket problem", and those already inside were asked to leave. Security staff then reportedly began checking under seats.
At around 10.30pm, the small crowd who were still waiting by the stage were informed that the show had been postponed. Local news site Expressen reported that police were looking for an armed man in his 20s.
The band have since released a statement, though they remain vague about the exact nature of the incident: "As the breach has not been resolved quickly and as audience safety is paramount, the police have advised The Globen and Live Nation that they have no option but to postpone tonight’s show, to a rescheduled date of 22 Tuesday September."
The band are set to play five night at London's O2 Arena next month. See full UK dates below. For tickets and more information, click here.
