November 2002

Had dinner last night in the YMCA dining room with Sarah. A mature black woman from Joburg South Africa. Was joined a little later by Della also mature and from the same city. They both are nurses, working over here to raise money for their families back home. Sarah had so much depth. Even our first chat was of depth and I recognized a deep person as we chatted freely. There was a freshness behind the hardworking face. She wants to save to be able to afford a business start up on her return. Not nursing as I would have suspected, but housing. She wants to get into housing when she returns. Before she moved away to work her permanent night shift at Oldchurch hospital we shared a lot.

Sarah was talking about Joburg and the community she lived in. I told her about the YMCA there and she knew of it in two places. She had also heard of Caesar Molabatsi who was the President of the South African YMCA, but now has been elected as President of the World Alliance of YMCA's. A hot preacher that he is. We had him often at Greenbelt during the dark days of apartheid.
We talked about Hillbrow, the place Mickaela O’Sullivan worked when she was third year Trainee here. How she worked at the YMCA with homeless children in that community. Sarah said she would never go there. It is too rough she explained. Yet the YMCA was there doing it. Mickaela was there doing it. The need is there and someone’s got to do it!

Was reflecting this morning as I woke before the bell. These early morning thoughts of all things YMCA. They swirl in and out of the subconscious mind as I pull the duvet over me to keep away the coldness of early morning.
I was thinking how she knew Felix, a young black lad in the hostel who comes from C*nning Town, in East London, my old rough patch.

I was there 10 years before I came to Romford. He came from Zimbabwe with his parents when he was 14. We had talked about the shock it was to shift cultures at such an impressive age. He had recently returned to his native land for the first time and was roughed up by the locals because he was different. Different accent and dress. Not streetwise, certainly in that street. Yet his East London street is one of the toughest in London town.

Felix is named after his Grandad and wants to study business and finance. His aspirations are to follow his parents in their business in C*nning Town. It is an African Night Club. It was news to me about such a place, but I have been away from the patch for nearly 18 years!

Was reflecting that the likes of Sarah have a wonderful influence on Felix and others without trying. Mother figures who relate to them as adults. Mature people who have a life experience to match theirs. See how deep it is? 'Community' working together to bring wholeness, a true YMCA mission objective. Us striving to meet the needs of individuals, but the experience of ‘community’ touching the lives of individuals through community.

I was thinking how good it is to have a diversity of cultures. Mr Singh who joined us for dinner with all his world travels and cultural experience. The learning for us as we sit in the YMCA Dining Room. As the world gets smaller and bombs are placed at other people’s feet because they are different. This world is beautiful but not if you have a bomb go off in your night club. Not if you are stabbed because your difference is the colour of your skin. Not if you believe in God who has a different name and loves only 'me and mine' ! The ‘me’ needs to become ‘we’ world-wide.

So my dinner has given way to a sleepless a.m., but has taken me a step, another, to human development. Community. Cultural awareness. Diversity. Faith. Communication and the joy of looking into a persons face and seeing their soul. So generous. So much love in there. So much.

Late Night Long Day Wilson here::

Strange
I always want to finish the day with a wee reflection.
Inbox emails slides outa the timeframe
Domestics do
Everything ddoes
blogging does not
Breathing deep does not .......

So not much from the Leaning Towers of Pip Wilson dot com tonight.

Here I am listening to Trentemouller
love him
music
beats
loveitloveit

Last nigh Joan and I sat down after a days work
(
wedding anniversary)
We had chicken stir fry with noodles.
With it - a bottle of Champagne and a box of chocolates.
The champagne was my first ever Bollinger
James Bond favourite I understand.
It was a present from our great friends - some two years ago.
Joan then watched football on TV and I bunged my buds in my ears and listened to Trentemoeller.

Piptastic
Now I am home and on catchup tomorrow so - if you are waiting for some emails or other stuff ......... I am back on the case.

Must say I had a great day today. Amongst other things, I was leading a course about dealing with violence and aggression. The subject makes the dynamics drip with emotion. The group was fantastic. They gave so much. They were eager to learn stuff alongside my learning. The big journey is getting intouch with ourselves - otherwise we have no hope in understanding the inner terror some humans carry around within themselves UNLESS we work on our own inner emotional management.
Awareness followed by skill.
Trouble is - the awareness is a continual journey which means the skills are in continuous catch-up.

Today turned me over. It gripped me.
Being with humans who are on the front line of hurt and pain.
Bless em

bBlessed also
in your beautifulness
breathe with me now ................ slow deep breaths ..................... before I say good night ........... another deep breath .......
........ breathe on me breath of God .................. fill me with life brand new ...........

Freedom Writers

This is a fantastic movie.
Powerful
powerful
real
challenging
wrenching
loveit

I never recommend anything - but I lurve this.

Feeling a bit on the edge tonight.
Meaning ................... expectant.

Feel a bit strange - and I am
I'm ok (you're ok)
Yes I am ok but digging into the soul and trying to understand the deeper me.

Me and Joan
wedding anniversary tomorrow - today by the time this hits the world web.
One thing I said to her today
we talked on from it ........

I never understood why she liked me in those days.
and loved me ...........

I think I was 22 when we met.
I could never understand her attraction
to me!
I think I had little self esteem in those days
wrong - I didn't have any .......
(I didn't even know about self esteem)
(( I had never heard of self esteem))

In church last Sunday
I was deep in the emotion of it
"Lord have mercy" was the words emanating out of the choir of 30 humans
I don't understand how I can be loved
sacrificial loved
that came to me again
fresh.

I remember when I became a human of Christian faith
I remember asking others about it ..............
because I couldn't get it -
how a creator God could find me acceptable
how someone as thick as me
someone as 'course' as me
someone as foul as me
someone as uneducated as me
someone with a language as me
someone as rough and hard as me
could be accepted
acceptable.

Believe me - I was dead rough.
Real
rugby player
factory worker
pub drinker
rough ...........

..... and yet I believed I was acceptable
blind faith
because I couldn't understand it.

I handed over my widows mite
reached out my hand - held on
held on to that mighty hand
walk-on-wilson-walk-on.

I have mentioned before on these pages that I was::
4o years old before I became an adult.
40 years old before I accepted myself.

Joan accepted me
God accepted me
before that
still do
good eh?

Now - I want to accept everybody
there is no human person who is not acceptable
beautiful
imperfection

Nothing in my hands I bring .........
Simply ................

Pip Speak

"What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared with what lies inside us."
Oliver Wendle Holmes

I grow in interacting situations.
They are the most risky and I am often sensitively cautious
– sometimes scared.
Spending time with individuals and groups who are communicating ‘Level 5’ excites me. It’s real. It drives me.

I know a human who is great at being in contact with their own feelings, which is great compared with the many who bury them deep and so turning into ulcers – or worse!
But hopeless at managing those feelings.

That’s the big issue with feelings – having them, owning them without being controlled by them.

Was Ghandi referring to someone you know when,
in response to the question about his worst experience – in the whole tortuous life,
he said
‘The hard hearted of the educated’.

Are you real?
or
Are you tight and controlled – not willing to share any vulnerability?
Transparency is just for your window overlooking your garden?

‘The single most worthwhile thing in my life ….
Was to admit I had a problem with food, drugs and alcohol’.
Elton John
