Mayflower Youth Work in Canning Town - London E16 - from old to new.

In the late 70's, maybe before you was born, I was running a Youth Work project in Canning Town London E16 with about 40 other full time/part time/ or volunteers.

We had an old building for the Club. Victorian. 

Built by the Dockland Settlement long before we became the Mayflower Family Centre.

We were about to build a new Youth Centre and this one below was to be demolished.

On the last night before we shut down, to concentrate on our Detached and Group Youth Work, we grabbed a few of the members to sign up.

Someone from this Club set up a Facebook page in the past year and all the local kids, now in their 50's or so!, add their comments to many memories and adventures we experienced together.

Fantasic memories.

It was my University Education.

We all deserve a certificate of attendance AND survival.

I will ever be full of appreciation for these young humans who changed my life - often through curtains of fear stress aggression unpredictability and a lot of love .......

It is only in a climate of trust that helps humans into choosing ......

We can see a persons behaviour.

We cannot see their experiences/journey/upstream.

It is only intimacy which reveals this.

It is only trust which frees the logjam

It is only a climate free from judgement/rejection which warms and opens.

It is only time and love that waters the colourful humans into disclosing their vulnerability.

It is only in a climate of trust that helps humans into choosing to start to begin all that they can become.

Leading groups over the years

I have asked people to write ......

Each given an index card

asked to write out something

they have never told anyone about.

As you can imagine

this is a big ask.

All with the objectives of - 

*Self Revelation

*Awareness of own feelings

*Experiencing vulnerability

*Experiencing empathy

*Growth and development

The card are then pic&mix - a shuffled pack

Each person taking different card

and then each being read to the whole group

in silence

feeling the feelings

within themselves

+ empathy with others as their revelation is read.

I have found a bunch of cards from distant past.

I don't know who wrote them.

I am planning to post one at a time over time.

Here is one::

I once went through fear of life.

My wife was depressed for so long, so often

I thought she would commit suicide.

It was horrible, I didn't know how to cope.

It was the sort of thing you couldn't tell others about.

So many men

Men especially struggle with disclosing their vulnerabilities.

(12 UK men commit suicide EVERY DAY)

Vulnerability is a strength

not a weakness.

We are being real / authentic

when we naturally share ours.

Experiencing doing it

is a learning process

* sharing our own

* LISTENING to other people's disclosures.
