Kairos Palestine: The Iona Call 2012
An important call has come forward from a range of UK churches and charities – including Greenbelt – to support all those struggling under Israeli occupation in Palestine today.
The call emerged from a specially convened conference held on Iona in the week before our Greenbelt pilgrimage to the island at the start of June. The Iona conference was attended by Mark Braverman and Rev Naim Ateek – the former a Jewish-American writer and the latter a Palestinian Christian theologian who has spoken at Greenbelt before. We wrote into the conference with a letter of support and representation from Greenbelt.
The Iona call was made in response to the original Kairos Palestine document, drawn up in December 2009, and intended to get the attention of Christian churches around the world to the situation developing in Israel-Palestine.
The Iona Call states:
We are called to respond boldly
to the deepening suffering
of our sisters and brothers
in Palestine under occupation by Israel.
We stand in faithfulness and solidarity
with Palestinians and Israelis
who are working tirelessly for a peace
based on justice.
We believe it is necessary
to challenge the deafening silence
of most churches
in the face of the continuing injustice
of dispossession and
denial of basic human
and political rights.

As soon as there is a UK portal where you and your communities can register your support, we’ll let you know. It will be soon, as the Iona call commits to establishing a Kairos UK network, which we’re very excited about. Watch this space.
