LIFE BEGINS ................. Greenbelt Festival

Postcard from Simon

The “significant impact” of Greenbelt

Huge thanks to Simon, who sent the postcard above to the office with the following message:
I’m writing a postcard every day in Lent to say thank you to those who have had a significant impact on my Christian life.
The festival played such an important part of my Christian formation, particularly the ethos and people who worked on the Fringe.
Thankyou. Simon.
Many thanks for your lovely message, Simon, and we look forward to hearing more stories about how Greenbelt has changed lives for the better in the run up to the 40th festival this summer…

I have been to Greenbelt since I was 16. I am now 38. It opened my eyes to an accessible, enjoyable and creative faith. I have been a steward and have attended through its down period and believed in it still as it moved to Cheltenham. I met my first love there at 16 and moved north as a result. It has kept my faith alive and enhanced friendships with friends of mine that go too. My kids have been since they were born, only missing last year as I gave birth to my third on 27th Aug. Messy Church has revolutionised our spiritual life. I still remember Griff Pilchard and the bandstand in 1991 with fondness but also loved the Unthanks in particular in 2011. Greenbelt is great, long may it continue!

That is a brilliant idea for Lent! May do it myself next year (and Greenbelt can expect a card from me too!)

Greenbelt has been in my life since 1983 and I will be there this year – God willing! It has always been an inspiration, a challenge and a time and place to think new thoughts. The festival has shaped who I am and given me an almost endless set of t-shirts!

Great idea, i’d be sending a postcard to greenbelt too. I’ve been attending since I was taken for the day in 1983 and as a full weekender since 86. I’m now 41 and a URC minister. Greenbelt was and reamins my spiritual home and it has been a joy to take young people from my churches just like I was taken as a teenager. the biggest joy is that this year I will have members from my church in Wigan camping with members of my former churches in Croydon and Sedgley. I’m pleased to say it is greenbelt which joins them, not me, and we are all lokking forward to another great year of memories yet to be made.

Just paid for 21 tickets for some of the tribe we bring with us each year. And there was a message from Alice, new Greenbelt friend from 2011, whose daughter is my daughter’s penpal! Letter received just yesterday and on the to do list to reply to. My first GBs were 91 and 92, then finally came back with two little girls in 2006 – been permanent fixture since apart from 2008 when cancer treatment was thoughtlessly scheduled over August! Every year our group of happy campers expands, as more children are born and old friends join us for our annual experiment in community living. Every year I say I am not coming next year, as tent living leaves me cranky and sleepless – but here I am organising and booking once more. See you there.
