Letters from D Wing: Worwood Scrubs ‘Behind the Bars’ by Pip Wilson and Bobby Hossain

"I have been stabbed twice, shot at numerous times, been homeless ...had two serious car crashes, depression, I have dealt with drugs addiction, sex addiction, steroid addiction, depression, …. Betrayal, drug dealing and seriously violent acts."

Bobby Hossain

Meet Bobby before you read his Prison letters to and from Pip Wilson.

By the age of seven he had moved home countless times and watched his mother battle with depression .. At the age of eleven Robert was known to be a young, troubled child with anger management issues. .....he slipped further and further into the criminal world.

The result of this was numerous arrests and eventually a case holding a maximum sentence of fifteen years. Bobby was found not guilty at trial and narrowly escaped a jail sentence but at twenty-two had lost his job, his first mortgaged property and found himself in the YMCA Homeless Hostel.

This is a book made of letters to and from Bobby in prison. Pip Wilson exchanged letters with Bobby as supportive and developmental as possible. Encouraging him to write was one objective, and Bobby does that so well.

This is an insightful peek into prison life including the day to day struggles of a young man and those around him. The book explores many of the issues raised by the Riots in London and other cities. It reveals the needs, the negative influence of prison life and a young man's struggle not to go under.

This book is a true honest and open communication between a prisoner coming to terms with his demons and a youth worker who became a true friend.

Bobby writes in the book:

"I like your phrase ‘a caterpillar looks nothing like a butterfly but one develops from the other’ and because I have already spent time with you I can see where you’re coming from but Pip. in here it’s such a violent angry place. It changes you. There are times where my anger and hatred of being in jail are boiling over and you can see it in my face. Other prisoners see a really angry man and I hate feeling like that Pip. You have no idea how hard I try to stay happy Pip but I find it so hard to smile when I am stuck in a cell like an animal."

“No matter what life has thrown at me I have always survived, and I know I will survive this Pip, but it’s like the gorillas at London Zoo - locked up. I feel I am losing that spark for life. I give you these thoughts Pip so you can show other people who are lost - they are not alone.”
