Birmingham-based five-piece Troumaca - video.

Birmingham-based five-piece Troumaca

The first band signed to Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings, Birmingham-based five-piece Troumaca's lengthy list of influences is pretty eclectic. From citing producers such as Lee "Scratch" Perry and Timbaland ("His early work still sounds vital, like it's from another planet," they said in a recent interview), to referencing the likes of Radiohead, UK grime and even UB40 as musical touchstones, they look anywhere and everywhere for inspiration. In fact, the band have a name for the music they make, calling it "sun-drenched tropical blissdom". For the softly unwinding Lady Colour – the first song to be taken from their debut EP, Virgin Island – that description seems perfectly apt. Featuring gently unfurling synth lines, a chorus of "This is cosmic love coming from above" and a smattering of steel drums that make you long for the summer, the whole thing just asks to be listened to horizontally. The video – premiered here – only adds to the suspicion that the song seems to have been released in the wrong season, as seemingly weightless (and mainly topless) bodies plunge into a swimming pool in slow motion.
• The Virgin Island EP is out via Brownswood Recordings on 28 January.
